Did You Know?

      Did you know that strollers used to be pulled by goats or other small animals? The mother did not push them like they do now. As you can see in the picture, they used to look like carriages, which were what people used as transportation before cars.

      Dust is in everybody's house; whether in clean houses, dirty houses, new houses, or old houses. If you didn't know already, dust is made up of  small pieces of matter. The matter can be many things: hair, bugs, lint, dirt, pieces of clothing and many more. But dust is mainly composed of skin cells. If you are wondering how skin cells got in your dust, I am about to tell you.        Deep underneath your skin, new cells are being created.  These new cells get pushed up to the surface of your skin. This is called desquamation process. When the new cells get pushed, the old skin flakes off and gets replaced with new skin. Your body sheds 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells a day. So, while you are in your house, skin cells fall and get mixed in with all the other pieces of matter scattered on the ground. This creates dust.

 Fact #1: Even though they can't get up and start break dancing, babies can responding to music. They move to the rhythm and tempo of the music. These extra bones fuse together over time and become the skeleton that we are most familiar with. Fact #3: The reason why babies need to be fed so often is because of how small their stomachs are. The average babies stomach is the size of a walnut. 

    The brain is the most important organ in every living creatures' body. It is the control system that send messages to different parts of your body. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org explains what the brain does: ''controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger, and every process that regulates our body."    Since the brain does so much, I thought it would be interesting to look at 3 cool facts about it. Fact 1: Our brains are always on the job. When people say that you only use 10 percent of your brain, it is actually a myth. Our brains never stop working; even while we are sleeping.  Fact 2: When you zone out, your brain goes into an autopilot mode. It does this because it recognizes that we can complete the task at hand without thinking hard about it. Fact 3: When we read, different parts of our brains activate. One part analyzes meaning, and the other recognizes words automatically. 

 Art Fact #1: The heads of the Roman statues were detachable so they could be interchangeable.  Fact 2: Vincent van Gogh made two starry nights;   The first is the one we all know:  The second one is called Starry Night Over the Rhone.  Fact #1: The Jewish Avengers.  When you hear the word 'Avengers', you probably think of the group of Marvel superheroes created by Stan Lee. But there is another group called the Avengers that are not the same as the Marvel characters. The Avengers were a groups a Jewish assassins. They hunted Nazi war criminals after the World War II. They poisoned about 2,283 German prisoners.                       Fact #2: Sack Gown.   The Great Depression, 1929-1939, was a very bad economic downturn. Stock markets crashed, people became unemployed, and a bunch of banks failed. Because no one had money to buy nice clothes, people resorted to using sacks to make outfits. Since these sack outfits were becoming a trend, food distributors made their sacks more colorful in an attempt for them to be fashionable.  These dresses are made out of the colorful sacks!   Fact #1: A Space Song.   A Canadian astronaut named Chris Hadfield recorded an album while orbiting space. The album is called Space Sessions: Songs for a Tin Can. The album consists of 11 songs that are all original and were written by Hadfield himself. The first song ever sang in space goes to Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. He sang a song a Shostakovich song called 'My Homeland Hears.' Fact #2: Sandpaper? More Like Sharkpaper.   Back in the 18th century, Dogfish, a fish in the shark family, was often used to sand the wood of violins.  Our bodies are amazing!! God knew exactly what He was doing when He was putting it all together. Every part of our bodies are there for a reason. Even the smallest bone in our bodies, which is called the stapes and is located in our ears! The stapes, along with two other bones, send vibrations to the inner part of our ear.  Another cool human body fact is that our lungs are not the same size. The lung on the right is shorter than the left lung because the liver is right under it. The left lung is smaller because the heart takes up a lot of space in there. Here is a picture so you can see what I am talking about:  The lung on our left is shorter because of how high the liver sits; the lung on our right is smaller. Ever since the 5th grade, I have always had an interest in Greek Mythology. I don't believe in it, but I find it entertaining.  So,  I will be writing 3 facts about it. I hope you enjoy!       Fact #1: Ares' Chaotic Sis.    Ares, the god of war, had a sister named Eris. She is the goddess of Chaos and Strife, which means: ''angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict.'' She is the cause of  Trojan War: she created a problem between the two conflicting sides, resulting in the Trojan War.      Fact #2: The Reason For the Seasons.    Hades, the god of the underworld, abducted Persephone, the goddess of the seasons and vegetation, to be his bride. Demeter, Persephone's mother and the goddess of agriculture, was of course upset about this, and because she was upset, the crops died. Zeus tried to make Hades bring Persephone back, but because she had already eaten six pomegranate seeds, she had to stay in ...

   As you saw from the title, babies do not shed tears. I think that this fact is funny because even though they can't have tear, they sure can cry! If you did not know, tear ducts are the things that allow us to shed tears. Babies don't develop them until they are one to three months old!

  Did you know that Pope Gregory IV declared on cats? To all my fellow cat lovers, you will understand that shock the felt when I heard this. He did this because he thought that black cats were a tool of Satan. When he ordered the cats to be exterminated, another problem came in. Because the cats were gone, all the rats came out and spread the plague!

Did you know that in Ancient Greece, people used to believe that red headed people turned into vampires after they died? If you are a red head, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, LOL. This thought process only came about because the Mediterranean Greeks have olive skin tones and dark features, whereas red heads have pale skin and are sensitive to sunlight. You can see why they would think this.  

 Did you know that there is a room in Microsoft's headquarters that has been crowned the title of world's ''quietest room"? It's true! The guy who made it, Hundraj Gopal says this: "As soon as one enters the room, one immediately feels a strange and unique sensation which is hard to describe." He also said: "When you turn your head, you can hear that motion. You can hear yourself breathing and it sounds somewhat loud." I think that I would be terrified to step into that room, lol.

  Did you know that you don't learn to smile, it's just natural. That's why newborn babies sometimes smile after they come out their mamas. It's not just a reflex. It's kind of like God gave us the gift to smile. Use it everywhere you go, even if you aren't feeling well. :)

   Just in case you did not know, aspirin is a medicine used for getting rid of pain. Now that you know this, I'll tell you about the fact. Did you know that you can use a tree as a substitute for aspirin? This tree is called a white willow tree. The white willow's bark has a chemical in it called salicin, which can be used to relieve pain and has anti-inflammatory effects.

  Did you know that side that wins is mostly the side that started? This means that the way that it's facing when it starts is the side it will land on. This is because the side with the face is heavier than the back side of the coin. So next time you participate in a coin toss, remember this fun fact.

 Did you know that it doesn't take 7 years to digest gum? Now that you know this, you don't have to panic if you swallow a piece. Another fact is that your stomach actually can't  digest gum! It goes right through your digestive system and out your pooh :).

Did you know that George Washington's teeth weren't really wood? As most people know, Washington's teeth were not real. But somehow, someone came up with him having wooden dentures. In reality, his faux teeth consisted of ivory, which is what human teeth and elephant tusks are made of, gold, lead, and other people's teeth. Because the teeth stained over time, it had an appearance of wood.

     Have you ever noticed how a human baby sucks on its thumb? Well, baby elephants do the same thing except with their trunks! The reason why they do this is because when the mama elephant isn't available to nurse, the baby will suck on his trunk instead. Humans do it for a different reason though. They do it to give themselves comfort.
